Synthetic vs. Conventional Motor Oil: Which is Best?

There are several advantages that synthetic oils have over their conventional counterparts.
  • lasts longer, usually 2-3 times more kilometers can be done between oil changes (make sure that a high quality oil filter is used as well)
  • has the ability to handle extremely high temperatures without breaking down
  • less engine wear, synthetic does not thicken in extreme cold such as conventional oils do
  • slightly higher horsepower and fuel efficiency
  • more environmentally friendly (less fluids used based on less changes)
Just make sure that the words 100% synthetic or FULLY synthetic oil is on the package label. Most synthetics will offer similar protection, the rest is marketing.

No pictures of synthetic motor oil containers have been provided, I am not here to promote any specific motor oil company. My goal is to inform drivers of the advantages that any synthetic oil has over a conventional one.

On the downside the cost for a synthetic oil change is almost double that of a conventional oil change.

I have included several articles if you would like to read more on this subject:

2013 FORD Escape recall -- AGAIN for a 7th time !!!

"There have now been seven recalls of the 2013 model of the Escape, a key SUV for Ford, the No. 2 U.S. auto maker. The recalls affected 161,334 Escape SUVs globally, mostly in the United States, and addressed potential leaks that could cause a fire."
"Ford is recalling the Escape SUVs from the 2013 model year equipped with 1.6-litre engines because the engine cylinder head may overheat and cause cracks that could allow oil to leak, according to documents filed with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. A Ford spokeswoman said there were 13 fires reported related to this issue, but no injuries."

Come on Ford, what's going on? Get the cars tested and assembled properly before selling them to the public. Yes your new model lines are styled beautifully but your quality control is horrible.

DUBAI & ITALIAN police supercars

Came across this article on thetruthaboutcars.com website. Kind of cool at what oil money can buy you, take a look. Now if you are in law enforcement you will be envious of the vehicles that the Dubai police force owns, well maybe with the exception of the Italian police.

I hope you aren’t looking for any in-depth commentary here. Earlier this month, fresh on the heels of the Yas Marina F1 race, was the Dubai Motor Show. Held every two years it contains an entire bushel of drool worthy machines from the most exclusive and exotic of manufacturer’s, the Dubai Police department also had a display of some of their vehicles.

Certainly our imagination gets worked up about the thought of an Audi R-8 V10 running down a criminal mastermind in a poorly driven Aventador; but the reality is these are primarily a public relations tools like the D.A.R.E cars of your local municipalities.

But still, the idea of running down a baddie in this AMG Merc without spilling your cappuccino is certainly a pleasant fantasy isn’t it? Then drop the top for your parade after successfully rescuing the proverbial kitten from the palm tree.

Enough with this German trash! If I am going to pursue monstrous criminals, I demand a proper technologically advanced vehicle, and if it has Burgerkingring credentials all the better. Behold, Godzilla, officer of the law. My local Abu Dhabi police force also has one of these.

I like AWD, but I cannot bear the thought of a true exotic being chased by a Datsun. Well then this Ferrari is probably more to your liking.

Special thanks to my new British friend Jason Rueben who snapped these shots and spared you from more of my iPhone interpretations.

Yes those are Lamborghini, makes you feel proud to be Italian. Wait, then again there is this:

OOPS, what can I say to my Italian friends, sorry guys gotta take the good and the bad.

2015 FORD Mustang -- Coming to Europe (Euro and NA specs.)

Usually the European cars make their way to North America and not the other way around. Here is one of those rare occasions.
Pretty sure many Europeans are waiting to get their hands on the new 2015 Ford Mustang. For many North Americans this is just another American muscle car, or is it? lets take a closer look.

Black 2015-Ford-Mustang-Carscoop11
Rear 2015-Ford-Mustang-Carscoop43

"The Market Press report notes that the potential engine options could include an alternative to an eco-turbo 2.3-liter 275-horsepower engine or an engine similar to the one used on the Ford Focus ST, which features an enhanced version of the 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine that generates 252 horsepower."

Information source: http://themustangsource.com/new-mustang-to-roll-out-in-europe-in-2015-4212/

According to Car&Driver the North American version will look slightly different and will also offer different engines.

"Ford has many plans for ultra-high-performance Mustangs. The first will be a successor to the Shelby-branded GT500, and the company will continue to offer Ford’s “Trinity” supercharged 5.8-liter V-8 making 662 horses. Past the new-gen Shelby GT500, Ford has additional powertrain options for two more hi-po nameplates.
The first is a twin-turbocharged V-8, code-named “Voodoo,” which displaces between 5.0 and 5.5 liters and, most intriguingly, has a “flat-plane” or 180-degree crankshaft, as Ferrari has used in its V-8s since 1973. This configuration, also found in the late Lotus Esprit V-8, is akin to connecting two four-cylinder banks to a common crankshaft. Flat cranks theoretically improve power, throttle response, and the soundtrack at the expense of greater vibration. This EcoBoost V-8 will produce between 550 and 600 horses. It will power a Shelby GT350–branded model that eventually will take over from the GT500, as Ford is desperate to discontinue that car’s costly and thirsty Trinity."

TESLA Model S fires

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating whether Tesla’s Model S electric car is vulnerable to fires. If in fact roadway debris can actually pierce the car’s underbelly and batteries resulting in a fire. The batteries are mounted beneath the passenger compartment and protected by a quarter-inch-thick metal shield.

Recently there were two incidents in which the Model S drivers struck metal objects on highways, objects penetrated the bottom of the car, punctured the battery and caused fires. The Tesla Model S warned the drivers of a problem and both escaped safely.

Tesla has sold around 19,000 Model S worldwide ranging from $70,000 to $100,000 US.

Best Winter Tires for 2013? -- Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8

Nobody knows winter tires like the Finns, Nokian based in Nokia, Finland, has been manufacturing winter tires since 1932 according to Wikipedia.
"Car tyre production began in 1932 by Suomen Gummitehdas Oy (Finnish Rubber Works Ltd). A three-company merger formed the Nokia Corporation in 1967; Nokian Tyres Limited was established in 1988 as a joint venture company split from the conglomerate."
"The company has a 30-hectare (74-acre) testing facility in Nokia, where it road tests tyres between April and November. From November to May, tests are carried out at its Ivalo Proving Grounds in Arctic Lapland. The Ivalo Proving Ground is the only permanent winter tyre testing facility in the world."
Wikipedia Link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nokian_Tyres

Which brings us to the all new Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8 Eco-Stud 8 winter tire. On 15.03.2013 Nokian set a new world speed record on ice at 335.713 km/h (208.602 mph) at the Gulf of Bothnia.
As the Finns might say "Perkele".
Full article: http://www.nokiantires.com/release?id=195382&year=2013

The driver was Janne Laitinen who holds multiple world records, the car used in the test was an Audi RS6. If you would like to see the video click here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VW5GMsT32RM

If this tire can do this I can't wait for the new winter tire test results versus other winter brands. I can safely say that they will still be number 1 for winter tires (dethrowning the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7). Sorry Michelin stick with what you do best the other three seasons.

All new -- 2015 LEXUS RC

Every time I hear the name Toyota two things automatically go through my mind, dependable and boring. Which I will contradict myself on both with this article. First of all Toyota's reliability and quality control has been slipping this decade (still best). On the other hand they have been bringing out some fairly exciting looking cars.

Here is a wonderful styling job by Lexus (Toyota). (Personally I'm not a great fan of two door vehicles (coupes), being of European decent we tend to prioritize practicality over styling.) This is car that looks great as a coupe and convertible as well, which is very rare.

The heart of the car is unknown so far but rumor has the 3.5-liter V-6 and a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with Toyota’s hybrid synergy drive (the same hybrid system as the Europe-only Lexus IS300h sedan).
The 2015 Lexus RC rides on the same platform as the Lexus IS, but with a slightly shorter wheelbase and a wider track, the Lexus RC is a bit lower and longer than the IS sedan. Wheels will be a deeply sculpted 10-spoke 19-inch wheel or a muscular five-spoke 18-inch version.
The all-new Lexus RC will make its world debut at the Tokyo Motor Show on November 20 2013.

Car manufacturers reliability ranking -- WORLD

Not all car models manufacturers produce are made with the same build quality and most times offer different reliability results. When it comes to auto manufacturers reliability ratings as a whole the average of all their models will be taken into account. Therefore the results below are for brand and not model specific. Every manufacturer has at some point in time produced a "lemon".

From reliabilityindex.com in the UK (Europe);
"The UK Reliability index takes into account all factors of a repair, the cost of the parts and the frequency of failures."
Top 10 most reliable auto manufacturers in order: Honda, Daihatsu, Suzuki, Toyota, Hyundai, Chevrolet, Lexus, Ford, Mazda, and Skoda. If you would like to see the full list click on the link:
http://www.reliabilityindex.com/manufacturer

From the New York Times article based  on consumer reports article (North America);
"The results of Consumer Reports’ annual survey, which tries to highlight the most reliable 2014 vehicles by evaluating past years’ models. The report is based on data from 1.1 million 2004-13 model-year vehicles leased or owned by Consumer Reports subscribers. Subscribers were asked whether, in the last year, they had a serious problem with their vehicle that required a visit to the dealer."
Top 10 most reliable auto manufacturers in order: Lexus, Toyota, Acura, Audi, Mazda, Infinity, Volvo, Honda, GMC, and Subaru. If you would like to see the full list click on the link:
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/29/automobiles/japanese-autos-lose-ground-in-consumer-reports-reliability-ratings.html?_r=0

From J.D. Power.com in the US;
"The study, now in its 24th year, measures problems experienced during the past 12 months by original owners of three-year-old vehicles (those that were introduced for the 2010 model year). Overall dependability is determined by the number of problems experienced per 100 vehicles (PP100), with a lower score reflecting higher quality."
Top 10 most reliable auto manufacturers in order: Lexus, Porsche, Lincoln, Toyota, Mercedes, Buick, Honda, Acura, RAM, and Suzuki.
If you would like to see the full list click on the link: http://autos.jdpower.com/ratings/dependability-press-release.htm

In summary I would take all three of these results and find a common factor in all. Basically manufacturers such as Toyota, Honda, Mazda, and Suzuki have repeatedly shown up in dependability tests. It may be a better bet to choose one of those or at least one of the manufacturers which score high two or more times on the reliability rankings.
You may also want to look at my October 10th posting on best rustproofed cars before making your final decision.
Happy shopping.

TIRES -- upsizing and downsizing for winter and summer seasons

It is well known that using a wider and lower profile tire in the spring, summer and fall will increase your cars handling and traction. Although the contrary is true for winter, a wider tire will actually decrease your traction on snow and ice.

http://www.tirerack.com/images/tires/tiretech/tire_dimen_2010.gif

215 is the tread width in mm, 45 is the section height (45% of the width), 17 is the rim diameter
You can change all these parameters as long as the overall diameter stays roughly the same.

As an example the summer size on the car is 215/45/17, I have changed the winter tire size to 195/65/15. Not only will the narrower tire increase the snow and ice traction it will cost almost half the price from $257 for the 215/45/17 to $169 for the 195/65/15 (example Nokian Hakka 7 studded).
That's $88 less per tire, now you have to purchase 15" steel rims for winter so that will decrease your savings to $48 savings per tire. (Although you will save your beautiful 17" mags from any salt damage). On top of this you will save $40 ($20+$20) for installation and balancing per tire for uninstalling and reinstalling the summer tires on your mags every year.
Therefore by downsizing you will have a savings of:
$48-$20(first year winter tire installation&balance)+$40=$68 per tire in the first year plus $40 savings for the installation and balancing in each of the subsequent years.
The most important aspect of downsizing for winter is the better traction that a narrower tire will provide by actually cutting through snow.
In all other seasons a wider lower profile tire will increase the handling on your vehicle dramatically.
Below you will find links to websites that offer free tire size calculators:

from 1010tires.com
http://www.1010tires.com/Tools/Tire-Size-Calculator
from tiresizeconversion.com (scroll down a little)
http://tire-size-conversion.com/tire-size-calculator/
from tacomaworld.com
http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/tirecalc.php

You have to input your original tire size and the new size you would like to use and it will compare the two sizes for you. Here is another example 175/65/15 up-sizing to 185/55/16,
http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/tirecalc.php?tires=175-65r15-185-55r16
and the original example,
