Ford Recall - 2012-2014 models, hold on to your doors!

Remember that old expression * hold on to your hats *, well now apparently some Ford owners have to hold on to their doors.
Ford recall affects 389,585 vehicles built between 2012 and 2014 model years. The recall involves  faulty latches that may allow the doors to fly open while the car is being driven. The faulty part is actually called a pawl spring tab which can break, in turn results to doors that can't be latched.

All models affected by the recall were built in Ford's three Mexican plants, these models are:

* 2012 to 2014 Fiesta vehicles built at Cuautitlán Assembly Plant in Mexico between Feb. 1, 2012, and May 31, 2013

Best All-Season Tires for 2015

Since writing this blog most of the feedback that I have receive from you the readers is positive in nature and I thank you for that. As well the majority of your feeback has to do with tire information and professional recomendations from the leading tire retailers and testers. Buying the right/best tires for your budget is a really important decision. We try to make a well informed decision because we all know that we will have to live with those tires on average between 3 and 5 years.

So here is a fresh all-season tire review from wheels.ca (14.04.2015)
Before I list their results of the top all-season tires here were the parameters used by wheels.ca in the data collection:
"In researching all-season tires, I found that test results and consumer feedback on TireRack.com, CanadianTire.ca and ConsumerReports.org support the above models as top picks, taking into consideration various performance characteristics. Bare in mind that user feedback is subjective as everyone has difference priorities and experiences based on their driving style and conditions. All new tires start out very good at the beginning of their life, but it is important to consider how their characteristics will change as the tire wears out."
  • Michelin Premier A/S (new tire design, top rated, pricey) ($133, 640 A/A)
  • General Altimax RT43 (best bang for the buck) ($80, 700 A/A)
  • Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 (best handling, acceleration, and braking) ($131, 500 AA/A)
  • Pirelli Cinturato P7 All Season PLUS (best ride, low road noise) ($106, 700 A/A)
  • Michelin Defender (best tread-wear, good fuel efficiency) ($125, 820 A/B)
  • Michelin LTX M/S2 (light truck SUV) (best overall truck/SUV tire, pricey) (N/A)
  • Firestone Destination LE2 (light truck SUV) (best value priced truck/SUV tire) (N/A)
  • Continental ExtremeContact DWS (best handling, acceleration, braking) ($110, 540 A/A)
  • Pirelli Scorpion Verde All Season PLUS (best ride, low road noise) (N/A)
  • Bridgestone Dueler HL Alenz PLUS (best tread-wear, good fuel efficiency) (N/A)
Beside each tire I have included the tread-wear life, traction and temperature information as well as a price in US dollars (tirerack.com) just to give you a rough idea of an average cost for a 205/55/16 tire. (chose the size due to it's high use on most midsize cars)
What you see is ($$$$, 500 AA/A), the higher the number the longer the tire will last. The first letter or set of letters correspond to traction, AA being the best then A then B then C. The second letter corresponds to the heat resistance of the tire the higher the letter the better A, then B, then C)
As an example the Michelin Defender tire will last for 1.5 times longer than the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3, but the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 has better traction and can handle higher speeds than the Michelin Defender can.
For more detailed information on how to read tread-wear, traction and temperature information on sidewalls follow this link to discounttire.com link: http://www.discounttire.com/dtcs/infoTreadwear.do

You have to decide which is the right tire for you based on your needs and driving style.
Myself knowing full well Michelin does produce what is probably considered the best (3 season) tires in the world. At $80 each I would not be able to pass up the incredible deal that the General Altimax RT43's offer. (almost $50 less on average per tire than the Michelins)

"As a general principle, it is best practice to select the highest quality tire that your budget will allow and follow your vehicle’s original manufacturer fitment for size, load and speed rating. When your tires are worn to the wear indicator, don’t put off purchasing new replacement tires because worn tires exhibit reduced performance and safety. After all, tires are what keep our vehicles safely planted on the road."

Potholes - There back, can you claim? and how, that depends on the city

Living in Montreal, Quebec, Canada has got to be the most frustrating thing as a motorist. Not only are the highways outdated (70's) and our overpasses collapsing now it's that dreaded time once again, pothole season! Oh, almost forgot exploding water pipes which flood the streets in the winter months which later become wonderful places to play hockey.
Here is just a sample picture I took today in a west end Montreal neighborhood.
The city has been blaming the construction companies of the 70's of stealing and using low quality materials in the original city infrastructure.
Well guess what when you tender jobs to the lowest bidder this is what you will most likely get. Quebec has been rocked with numerous construction scandals over the years, the most recent SNC-Lavalin.
Knowing this problem exists what has Montreal done, they passed a law which makes it virtually impossible to sue the city for damages. So Montrealers and tourists beware city potholes will cost you.
https://shawglobalnews.files.wordpress.com/2015/03/pothole-damage-eb.jpg?w=720&h=408&crop=1
Just look at this quote from abouttravel.com: http://montreal.about.com/od/gettingaroundtown/f/pothole_recours.htm concerning making a pothole damage claim in Montreal.
"Before submitting a claim for damages, be aware that the city of Montreal is not liable for damage to tires or suspension systems from road conditions (like potholes). However, damage to steering, wheel rims, alignment, hubcaps, and other parts can be claimed for compensation. But in order to receive compensation, the motorist must show city authorities were aware of the pothole in question and yet did not repair it, or at least indicate its presence via warning signs, within a reasonable delay.
Motorists have 15 days after the pothole incident to submit a claim by registered mail to the city of Montreal.City authorities are not necessarily going to accept your claim, but it's certainly within your rights to file one. Call 311, the city of Montreal info line, for more details on preparing your claim. And remember to request a copy of the city's pothole registry for the time period in question just in case someone else had previously reported the pothole."
Here is what abouttravel.com suggests you do:
  1. Take pictures of the pothole (OK cellphone, such as mine above)
  2. Measure and record pothole depth and width. (yes because everyone has a tape measure in their car, get real!)
  3. Present witnesses who were aware of the pothole and how long it was in disrepair (e.g., residents living in front of the pothole, local merchants with neighboring storefronts, other motorists who suffered damage, police, etc.) (I will go knocking on stragers doors, ya OK)
  4. Have a repair estimate from a recognized garage indicating the extent of the damage and what car parts were affected by the impact.
  5. This is crucial: find out if the city was aware of the pothole by checking the city of Montreal's pothole registry as well as CAA-Quebec's Road Problem Watch webpage. And present proof of the date(s) the pothole was reported: show copies of emails/letters sent to the city on the subject of said pothole, present recorded times and dates of calls to 311 about said pothole, show a copy of the city pothole registry -- registre de signalement des nids-de-poule -- for the period in question (it's available on request and it will show you if anyone else reported the pothole prior to your accident), print out a pothole notification entry on CAA-Quebec's Road Problem Watch page if applicable, etc.)
So as you can see it is easier to get hit by lightning twice and then struck by a bus than to receive monetary damages from potholes due to city negligence.
This law was made to protect the city of Montreal and not it's citizens. I though we paid taxes to the government to provide us with usable services and not garbage. Driving in Montreal in the springtime is an obstacle course.
Hiding behind a law is not the solution!

15 of the most durable car that refuse to die (trucks not included)

Here is the list of the 15 most durable cars ever produced that just keep going and going. List was compiled by Kiplinger on January of 2015, in no specific order. There are some surprises in there as well.
  1. Honda Accord - Model years 1976 to present
  2. Buick Roadmaster Wagon (Chevy Impala wagon) - Model years 1991-1996
  3. Geo Prizm (Toyota Corolla clone made in US) - Model years 1984-2010
  4. VW Van - Model years 1950-1992
  5. All RWD Volvo - Model years 1966-1996
  6. SAAB 900 - Model years 1979-1993
  7. Subaru Wagons - Model years 1990 to present
  8. Mercedes 240D/300D/300TD (diesels) - Model years 1975 to 1983
  9. Toyota Camry - Model years 1992 to present
  10. Ford Escort - Model years 1991 to 2002
  11. Chevy Camaro/Pontiac Firebird - Model years 1982-2002
  12. Ford Crown Victoria/Mercury Marquis - Model years 1992 to 2011
  13. Buick LeSabre - Model years 1989 to 2005
  14. Jeep Cherokee (SUV that was car based) - Model years 1987 to 2001
  15. Jaguar XJ6 sedan - Model years 1995 to 1997
I can't say that I agree this this entire list, I would have to exclude vehicles 14 & 15 on the list.
Reason for #14 exclusion assembly of the Cherokee was sub par at best. Excluding the engine everything else on the Cherokee was biodegradable.
Exclusion of #15 the XJ6 is mainly due to the extremely high cost and scarcity of the replacement parts.

2016 Hyundai Tuscon (European specs) - All-New

Where other entry model SUV makers are offering bland styling Hyundai finally has got the right recipe. The uber sexy 2016 Hyundai Tuscon, Hyundai is proving lately to other auto manufacturers and the public that you can actually produce well built and nice looking vehicles at a reasonable price.
https://file.kbb.com/kbb/images/content/editorial/slideshow/2016-hyundai-tucson-previewed-at-geneva/hyundai-tucson-exterior_1-600-001.jpg
For those of you who have seen the most recent model of the Hyundai Santa Fe will tell me that it is a "mimi-me" version of that SUV.  Yes it is, styling is almost identical but smaller. It is clearly targeted to the European and Asian markets. Although here in Canada it's a very popular model and there are still plenty of older Tuscon models on the road. As you can see from the pictures the front grill is very "Hyundai like", Mazda has also followed this same styling idea with almost all their vehicles having the same front fascia.
https://file.kbb.com/kbb/images/content/editorial/slideshow/2016-hyundai-tucson-previewed-at-geneva/hyundai-tucson-exterior_2-600-001.jpg
Hyundai has released the European specifications. Built on an all new platform the 2016 Hyundai Tuscon has 18.5 cubic feet (524 L) of cargo space with the second row up. Overall length of 2016 Tuscon increases to 176.1 inches (447 cm), 2.6 inches (6.6 cm) longer than the previous model.
There are two four cylinder engines available: a 1.6 liter normally aspirated gasoline engine offering 130 hp and the turbocharged version producing 170 hp. Three diesel options will be available in Europe ranging from a 1.7 to 2.0 liters in displacement.
Transmissions choices: 6-speed manual, 6-speed automatic or 7-speed dual clutch automatic.

Car and Driver states that non European markets get a direct-injected 2.0 L four cylinder which they expect would be the U.S. market’s standard engine. Currently the 2.0 L GDI engine produces 173 hp @ 6500 rpm on our crappy North American 87 Octane gasoline.

https://file.kbb.com/kbb/images/content/editorial/slideshow/2016-hyundai-tucson-previewed-at-geneva/hyundai-tucson-interior_1-600-001.jpg
On the safety front, Hyundai's Autonomous Emergency Braking with three modes, pedestrian, city and inter-urban.  "Automatic braking is engaged whenever an unsafe closing speed with a person or vehicle in front, from low to high speeds, is detected. Other safety features include Lane Keeping Assist that proactively corrects the steering to avoid unintended lane departure, and Rear Traffic Cross Alert, which has radar to scan a 180-degree area behind the vehicle, alerting the driver to cross-traffic. Other drive assists include blind spot detection and an information function that alerts the driver to the local speed limits."
Hyundai has come a long way since the introduction of the Pony. In my opinion Hyundai has improved the most from all the major auto manufacturers, well done Hyundai keep it up. I will definitely take a look at this all new 2016 Tuscon if it offered in manual with AWD here in Canada. Unfortunately here in Canada (North America) in order to get the AWD version you have to take the auto box, pity.

2016 Honda Pilot - Larger yet lighter (update)

UPDATE 22/02/2015: Engine choice has been confirmed by Honda.ca website as a  new 3.5-litre, direct-injected i-VTEC V6 engine with Variable Cylinder Management cylinder deactivation technology.
Link to full article will all interior and exterior features: http://honda.ca/future-vehicles
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
First of all I must say I love this new blue colour on the 2016 Honda Pilot. The "box" is finally gone replaced by a more rounded softer look. P.S. - Element (box1) & Pilot (box2)

A new direct-injected 3.5 Liter V6 (from the Acura MDX) will be implanted. The V6 will be paired with either the MDX’s 6 speed automatic transmission and in top trims a ZF sourced 9 speed with automatic start-stop. Power is unknown so far but the 3.5-liter V-6 in the MDX currently produces 290 horsepower and 267 lb-ft of torque. The engine is also equipped with two-stage Variable Cylinder Management, this switches between six and three cylinder modes depending on load.
http://blog.caranddriver.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/2016-Honda-Pilot-202-876x535.jpg
The new Pilots overall length has been stretched by 3.5 inches (8.9 cm) to 194.9 (4.95 cm) but the new version drops roughly 300 pounds (136 kg) from the previous Pilot model.
http://blog.caranddriver.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/2016-Honda-Pilot-204-876x535.jpg
Options include 20 inch wheels, panoramic roof, as well as whole list of safety equipment, including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance, and road-departure mitigation.

No price point has been set as of yet as the Pilot doesn’t go on sale until this summer.

Tested -- Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8 real world review

Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8 studded review:

On December 5, 2014 I had decided to upgrade my Gislaved NordFrost5 studded tires to the new Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8 studded version.
Test car is a 2010 Honda Fit Sport 5 speed manual running on a downsized base car version of 175/65/15 tires versus the stock 185/55/16. I chose the 15 inch version based on lower cost per tire as well as the extra height of the rubber (65 profile) to absorb those nasty Quebec potholes better. Keep in mind that the Honda Fit is an extremely light vehicle weighing in at a mere 1122 kg in the manual version.
I have currently done 1369 hard driven kilometers on the Hakkas. The kilometers were mixed roughly 50/50 city/highway.
The Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8 studded were rated the best among all winter tires in 2014. Please keep in mind that my comparison tires are the Gislaved NordFrost5 studded tires previously on the same car. The Gislaveds were rated in the top 15 out of roughly 60 winter tires.

The Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8's are incredibly stable at highway speeds, the Gislaveds were good as well but we are at whole new level in handling and driving comfort. In town, with the Gislaveds the Fit would jump around like a Yak over uneven city roads, with the Hakkas those road abnormalities are absorbed better.
Cornering with the Hakkapeliitta 8's is very good as well (in the cold), almost as good as my summer tires.
Another very surprising aspect is how quiet they are for a studded tire compared to my previous studded tire. Steering and body vibration is kept to a minimum versus the Gislaveds even though the Nokians have an insane amount of studs (see pictures below) versus the competition.
The reason the stud itself is placed slightly deeper in the tire and uses the cushion Eco Stud system.
Deep snow traction is also vastly superior to the previous tire, although I don't see much difference between the tires as far as ice traction is concerned.
In conclusion if you have a need for speed in the winter, get them. If you want better handling with no spongy feeling like the Yoko IG series get them.
Yes they sell at a premium but now I know the reason why. Like with most things in life you get what you pay for. For me it's Nokians for winter forever.

MAGNUM MK5 - Canadian built 0-100 km/h in 3.2 sec.

What exactly is a Magnum MK5?
http://www.magnummk5.com/images/news/2014-10-28_magnum_mk5_ted7_photography_01.jpg
Built in Boucherville, Quebec, Canada from carbon-fiber composite.
The MK5 has a four cylinder rear mid-mounted engine producing 250 hp @ 11,000 RPM. This in turn translates to a 0-100 km/h time of 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 240 km/h. The MK5 uses a 6-speed sequential gearbox transmission with a limited slip differential powering the rear wheels. Magnum says that the MK5 has been tested producing up to 2Gs of lateral force at the racetrack.  Ride height set to 90 mm (3.5 in) for track and a 110 mm (4.3 in) on the street. (Can be set at factory per your preference, or can be interchanged by user)
Even though it is built in Quebec I don't think that we would be able to use it much here with our famous ginormous potholes.
The MK5's dimensions are L=3,914 mm (154.1 in), W=1,884 mm (74.2 in), H=1,069 mm (42.1 in) with a total weight of only 1,200 lbs (545 kg).
The MK5 rides on 18" ultra-light alloy wheel with 225/40R18 rubber in the front and 265/35R18 rubber in the rear.
This a great example of how an exotic car can be domestically produced right here in Quebec, Canada. Great job Magnum, wishing you luck.

2014, The Year of Record Recalls - What's going on?

56 million cars were recalled in 2014 worldwide with the majority of them being in the US at 37.5 million cars.
http://www.bloomberg.com/image/iNUvZsNSuz_8.jpg
With so many automotive parts being outsourced nowadays it's no wonder that all automotive manufacturers are affected simultaneously. Takata is a good example, their seat belts and airbags were installed in several auto manufacturers cars.
With numerous deaths associated with the GM faulty ignition switches and Takata airbag explosions the public and governments have taken legal action against the manufacturers. This is turn has increased the amount of recalls that auto manufacturers have requested. Is the legal system finally beginning to work? How many more lives need to be lost before there is proactive and NOT reactive action taken by all major producers.
GM faces 95 lawsuits as of July 23 just from the ignition-switch recall.
The U.S. Justice Department in March fined Toyota $1.2 billion for deceiving the government when its vehicles were under investigation for unintended acceleration in the fall of 2009 and early 2010.

Car and Trucks are not cheap, we pay a large amount of our after-tax income to purchase them, shouldn't they at least be safe?  Consumers must punish those manufacturers by not purchasing vehicles from them and taking their business to another manufacturer.
I myself have been a victim of an 80's Dodge (Chrysler) lemon, I have changed cars six times since then, but non of them have or ever will be a Chrysler again. This is an example of my personal experience and I'm sure that there are some of you that feel the same way with GM, Toyota, VW etc.
My point here is that we the PUBLIC must financially punish auto manufacturers who have done us wrong by no longer purchasing cars produced from those manufacturers.
Here are some links to articles:

Year Gone By -- Top Summer Tires In 2014

Yes I know it's winter here in Canada, that's what windows are for.

This article is especially for all of you who may not be living in the dreaded winter season currently. Besides when they talk about summer tires here in Canada they really mean 3 season tires, which are good for all 4 seasons in most countries.
Enough talking, here are the top picks by price category:

Best tire in the $100-$150 range (P205/55R16 sample)
  • Dunlop Signature II (touring) – High-mileage tread designed for comfort
  • Continental PureContact (performance) - A high-mileage, DWS rating*, low-rolling resistance tire with a “V” rating
  • Pirelli P7 A/S Plus (performance) - Comfort biased, good handling, low-rolling resistance with a “V” rating
  • Toyo Extensa A/S (touring) – High-mileage tread, good handling

Best tire in the $150-$200 range (P205/55R16 sample)
  • Toyo Proxes 4+ (performance) - A fairly high-mileage performance tire with a “V” rating
  • Michelin Pilot A/S 3 (performance) - Good low-temp and wet grip, excellent dry, strong lateral grip
  • Michelin Premier(touring) – High-mileage tread, good wet traction, EverGrip Technology**
  • Yokohama Ascend (touring) - Eco low-rolling resistance technology, high mileage and quiet tire
  • Bridgestone Turanza Serenity + (touring) - Quiet, comfort biased, good handling

Best tire: $225+ (P225/45R17 sample)
  • Michelin Pilot Super Sport (summer performance) - Fairly high-mileage ultra-high performance, good wet traction
  • Michelin Pilot A/S 3 (all-season performance) - Good low-temp and wet grip, excellent dry, strong lateral grip
  • Bridgestone Potenza RE97 AS (all-season performance) - Quiet, comfort biased, superior handling
  • Yokohama ADVAN Sport V105 (summer performance) - Ultra-high performance, decent wet traction
http://www.michelinman.com/mediabin/Approved/Michelin/Visuals/Digital/tire-pilot-sport-a-s-3-hero.png
As you can see most "summer" tires picks have A/S (all-season) after the product name. These tires can be driven under light winter weather conditions. Here in Canada it has been said (as a guideline) that an A/S tire will start loosing it's grip at temperatures below 7 degrees C (44 degrees F). For most countries on Earth these tires can be left on the car throughout the year.

2015 Volkswagen Golf R SportWagen (290 horsepower)

http://media.caranddriver.com/images/14q4/643301/2015-volkswagen-golf-r-sportwagen-spy-photo-photo-643303-s-520x318.jpg
This is not your typical VW station wagon, it’s a Volkswagen Golf R SportWagen circling the Nürburgring track. (Euro-market model shown)
Power comes from a turbocharged 2.0-liter four cylinder producing 290 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque (EA888 engine), it can be paired up with either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Power is distributed to all four wheels via Volkswagen’s Haldex based 4MOTION four-wheel-drive system.

We most likely will not see the SportWagon here in North America so we will have to settle for the Golf R in 3 and 5 doors.

2016 Honda HR-V engine and transmissions revealed

It's official in most countries the 2016 HR-V will be using the Civic 1.8L engine as my previous blogs assumption. Unfortunately only some countries will get the 6 speed manual, all others will be stuck with the CVT. As well looks like propulsion of the HR-V at least in the early years of production will be solely to the front wheels and not AWD.

Here as some links to engine and transmission choices based on specific Counties.

Will keep you all up to date on what the North American version of the HR-V will be fitted with after the LA auto show on the 19th of November.

UPDATE:
NORTH AMERICA: (news10.com)
As expected another disappointment, manual transmission available only on base FWD HR-V model.

"Power comes from a highly refined and responsive 1.8-liter SOHC 16-valve 4-cylinder engine with i-VTEC valvetrain producing a peak 138 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 127 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,300 rpm (both SAE net). The engine is mated to a sporty and fuel-efficient continuously variable transmission (CVT) with Honda "G-design" shift logic, or a slick-shifting 6-speed manual transmission (2WD models only)"

All I can say is that Honda better price the HR-V base model under $20,000 Canadian. For $25,995 Canadian you can get a much larger 6 speed manual Subaru Forester with AWD and 2.5L boxer engine standard. Plus the vastly superior Subaru AWD system over the Honda Real-Time AWD system.
Don't mean to alienate those who prefer the automatic transmission to the manual. It's just getting very annoying that AWD is never available to drivers who prefer to drive the stick shift over the automatic. (Jeep and Subaru still make standard AWD vehicles). Besides what is an SUV without AWD, just a jacked up station wagon.

2016 Honda HR-V (Compact SUV) Official Shape for NA

http://blog.caranddriver.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/hr-v1-626x416.jpg
The North American version of the all-new Honda HR-V to be built in Celaya, Mexico and will have a final look as above. I kinda like the smooth bubble like look of the front, I believe the new HR-V shape will neither excite or disappoint buyers.
Originally the HR-V was supposed to get the same 1.5L four cylinder engine (130 hp) that powers the new Honda Fit, mated to a CVT automatic transmission. A recent article on Car&Driver throws some doubt into that report. Based on the extra body weight it would make sense for Honda to throw into the HR-V the North American Civic engine instead.
http://blog.caranddriver.com/all-new-honda-hr-v-crossover-makes-its-north-american-photo-debut/
The 1.8L four cylinder plant that produces 143 hp would be an ideal fit (no pun intended) for the HR-V. Please, please Honda make a 6 speed manual and AWD standard on the HR-V. It's so annoying that the only AWD SUVs produced in manual today are produced solely by Jeep and Subaru.
Inside the HR-V will have the same Honda Fit "magic seat" witch increases the interior cargo volume by moving the gas tank to the middle of the vehicle. This in turn allows the back seats to fold completely flat into the floor.
"Further details about the Honda HR-V will be revealed on Nov. 19 at 12:35 p.m. PST at the Los Angeles Auto Show" According to hondanews.ca

2015 Subaru Forester

With winter around the corner I'm dreading another year of massive snowstorms. Here in Canada we are known for our 40 plus centimeter snowstorm daily dumps at least 5 to 10 times per winter. As much as I love my little sub-compact for it's great gas mileage even my studded winter tires can't help sometimes.
My research for the ultimate SUV has brought me to the 2015 Subaru Forester. It was completely redesigned in 2014, as most of you well know, never purchase a vehicle in it's first year of production. Usually most manufacturers are still getting some of the kinks out of the armor. A good example is was the new Ford Escape, eight recalls and counting (see my previous Escape recall blog)

Now to the 2015 Forester (not including XT). Power comes from a 2.5L (4 cyl.) Dual Overhead Cam, 16-valve, horizontally opposed, 4-cylinder SUBARU BOXER engine with Electronic Throttle Control and Active Valve Control System. Power output is 170 hp @ 5800 rpm and 174 lb-ft torque @ 4100 rpm. Acceleration from 0-98 km/h (60 mph) is 9.3 seconds which is average for this segment.
There are two transmission choices available a 6 speed manual and a CVT automatic. AWD (all-wheel drive) is standard across all 2015 Forester models. With the manual transmission you get the Subaru symmetrical full-time All-Wheel Drive system: Viscous-coupling limited-slip center differential (power distribution is 50/50 front/back wheels). The CVT gets the Subaru symmetrical full-time All-Wheel Drive system: Electronically controlled multi-plate transfer clutch (60/40 front/back under normal conditions).
Hill Descent Control is standard on all CVT models only as well as four wheel disc brakes with ABS and EBD (Electronic Brake-force Distribution)
Front and rear stabilizer bars, MacPherson strut with lower L-arm suspension in the front and double-wishbone suspension in the back are standard across the lineup.
In the latest Consumer Reports automotive magazine it was rated as the most efficient small SUV on the market. It is also the IIHS top safety pick in it's category of small SUV.
http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/magazine/2014/04/top-picks-2014/index.htm
http://www.iihs.org/iihs/ratings

Consumption for the 6 speed manual is 10.6/8.4 (City/Hwy) (L/100km) (27/34 mpg) and 9.6/7.5 (City/Hwy) (L/100km) (29/38 mpg) for the CVT auto. For those outside of North America these numbers are for regular grade gasoline of only 87 octane.
Cargo volume is 974 Liters (34.4 cubic feet) with seats up and a whopping 2115 (74.7 cubic feet) with the rear seats folded and passenger volume comes in at 3067 Liters (108.3 cubic feet)

As for the price, starts at $25,995 Canadian for the base model and ends up at $35,695 for the Limited with technology package. PDI and freight is $1650 then you have to add the dreaded taxes which will bring you to almost $32,000 for the base model.
Although base model comes well equipped with A/C, cruise control, review camera, heated front seats, and bluetooth connectivity.

Subaru AWD system explained on allwheeldriven: http://www.awdwiki.com/en/subaru/

Apart from the so-so looks this SUV looks like a winner, especially for those of us who still prefer the manual gearbox over the auto. (Just wished it had the styling of the 2015 Lexus NX)
