2016 Subaru Impreza WRX (Concept) and a personal complaint

I have always believed that Subaru has one of the best AWD systems in the automotive market, and definitely the easiest to repair. The only problem is that most of it's lineup styling was uninspiring till now. This has got to be the best looking WRX ever, that is if the production version will match that of the concept.
The other issue with Subaru (specifically in North America) is the 2.5 Liter four cylinder engine, it is still using a timing belt. Most other manufacturers have gone to a timing chain which reduces the maintenance costs in that it does not really need to be replaced. Subaru's timing belt on the 2.5L four engine must be replaced at 168,000 km. "It is a labour intensive job that also involves replacing the idler pulleys, tensioner and water pump and costs just over $1,000"
We will wait and see, it being too early at this moment for any engine information to be leaked out on the 2016 WRX.

Global Airbag Recall -- Honda, Nissan & Mazda

Takata Corp. which is a Tokyo-based automobile component maker is the world's leading manufacturer of airbags, seat belts, steering wheels and other auto parts.
The recall concerns the Takata Corp. airbags. the problem is that the airbag may possibly EXPLODE during a crash.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b116/brianm767/IMGP9943.jpg
The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration believes that high humidity may be a factor for this issue, complaints were made about airbag failures in two states Puerto Rico and Florida.
No accidents have yet been reported related to the recalls, but Honda Nissan and Mazda say it's a precautionary move.
Honda Motor Co. recalled 2.03 million vehicles, including 1.02 million in North America and nearly 669,000 in Japan. Honda said they were manufactured between 2000 and 2005.
Nissan Motor Co. recalled 755,000 vehicles globally manufactured from 2001 through 2003, while Mazda Motor Corp. recalled nearly 160,000 vehicles manufactured from 2002 through 2004.
Takata said it believes some problematic inflators were supplied to BMW, Chrysler, Ford, Honda, Mazda, Nissan and Toyota for vehicles sold in the United States.
If you have purchased a used vehicle, make sure that you notify your local automotive dealer (brand) and register your address with the parent company. This is to make sure that you receive any recall notices for your specific vehicle through the mail by the manufacturer.

HYBRID or DIESEL? Which to choose? How about both

Since I started writing my blog I have been a firm believer that a hybrid power-plant for all vehicles is the future of the automotive industry. A diesel-hybrid system that is.
It is thus of no surprise that VW is leading the way with this new technology. The upcoming VW Cross-Coupe and Tiguan will feature this new VW diesel-hybrid technology, you may view it in my previous blog dated 3/13/14.
Related to that diesel-hybrid technology is this new VW achievement, a diesel-hybrid vehicle that gets 313mpg (that's 0.75L per 100km).
The XL1 which is the worlds most fuel efficient vehicle to date.
http://cdn.pocket-lint.com/r/s/727x/assets/images/phpt8y0zm.jpg
Here are it's stats:
The car uses a 0.8 litre, two cylinder TDI engine (turbo diesel) and electric motor with a 5.5kWh lithium-ion battery pack. It's capable of travelling on electric power alone for 31 miles (49.89 km), with the use of the hybrid system it can travel 313 miles (503 km) on a gallon (3.78L) of diesel.
XL1 has a carbon fibre reinforced plastic body to keep weight down and a low center of gravity. It can carry 4.2 cubic feet of cargo (119 Liters) in the 153 inch (389cm) long car.
VW says it will only be making 250 units of the XL 1. The price tag in Euros (get ready ..........) €110,000 ($149000 US) and it's only sold from Germany. At that price you better do enough driving to save the comparable fuel to offset that ridiculous sticker price.

Tire/Tyre Aging -- When rubber becomes dangerous

Yesterday at work I was having a discussion with three of my workmates about tires in general. The subject came up of "the lifespan of a tire", how long should you keep driving on your tires? So I decided to research exactly what the experts say.
Many of us really don't realize how dangerous these older tires we may be driving on are. So how old does a tire or tyre (depending on your country of origin) have to be to be dangerous? The majority of rubber manufacturers tend to agree on a TEN year maximum from the date of manufacturing.

Here are various picture samples, where you may find the date and the way it is printed before going into more detail.
http://www.americanmotorcyclist.com/Libraries/Riding_Street_Images/20101111TireDate.sflb.ashx
http://www.rsa.ie/PageFiles/5206/Picture1.jpg
https://encrypted-tbn3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTnKbUBHEhvc4CtmNaCmfgMV7pqNGPNSIiElxzKGGgd5C1qdhir

The trick to finding the date most of the time is to look for the word DOT and follow that line along. Remember first two digits are the week of production XX out of 52, and the second two digits are the last digits of the year, such as 2007.
The tire in the last image above was manufactured on week 9 in the year 2007.

Here is picture of a tire that was used way past it's day, stay safe.
https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQ7cWEavggf9JaYy12Q2SbNhIGGlIigszZCfHawDb9sPXWxK461
" The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and tire manufacturers are currently studying the many variables. Exposure to the elements (sun and atmospheric), regularity of use (frequent or only occasional) and the quality of care (maintaining proper inflation pressure, wheel alignment, etc.) will all influence the answer. So while tire life depends on the service conditions and the environment in which they operate, the difficult task remains how to identify all of the variables that influence a tire's calendar age and attempt to quantify their influence."
"The British Rubber Manufacturers Association (BRMA) recommended practice issued June, 2001, states "BRMA members strongly recommend that unused tyres should not be put into service if they are over six years old and that all tyres should be replaced ten years from the date of their manufacture.""
"More recently, The Japan Automobile Tire Manufacturers Association (JATMA) recommended practice issued May, 2005, states "customers are encouraged to have their vehicle tires promptly inspected after five years of use to determine if the tires can continue to be used (recommends spare tires be inspected as well). Furthermore, even when the tires look usable, it is recommended that all tires (including spare tires) that were made more than ten years ago be replaced with new tires."

New "Green" Small Cars - A fatther-daughter story

This blog is about a father and daughter looking for a new fuel efficient small car for basic hassle free transportation. The story takes place in urban Boston, USA where parking is not easy to find. Requirements were fuel efficiency, able to carry four adults comfortably and reliability of vehicle. Fancy options were not a priority and stick shift was preferred to keep costs down. Keep in mind that most manufacturers charge around $1000 for the automatic. With  a budget of 12-15 thousand US dollars these were the choices.

In alphabetical order were:
  • Chevrolet Spark LS
  • Ford Fiesta S
  • Honda Fit (base model)
  • Mazda 2
  • Mitsubishi Mirage DE
  • Nissan Versa S (sedan)
  • Nissan Versa Note S (hatchback)
  • Toyota Yaris
Elimination process commenced, Ford Fiesta had too little rear leg room. The Chevy Spark had a motorcycle-style instrument cluster. Toyota Yaris felt uncompetitive, with an unappealing dashboard layout and manual door mirrors that required opening the window to adjust them. The Mazda2 was dropped because other cars offered a better dollar value. The Versa Note because it was too similar to the Fit, which was a better overall vehicle with a solid reputation.

By the third weekend, a short list had emerged: Honda Fit, Mitsubishi Mirage, and Nissan Versa S sedan.
"Everything about the Versa S was "good enough." With crank windows, manual door locks, an all-black dashboard, and a rear seat that didn't even fold down, the Versa S is a very basic car.  But my daughter felt it drove fine, with adequate acceleration and handling. There was really nothing wrong with the Nissan Versa sedan although we suspected it might be a difficult car to fall in love with."
"Without considering price, the Honda Fit is clearly the vehicle of choice among this group. With power windows, power door locks, a USB port, and its astoundingly flexible "Magic Seat" fitted even to the base model, the Fit is relatively luxurious. Its rear seat knee and head room is excellent, and the multiple ways to fold the rear seat makes it clear that the Fit would be a champion in any hauling competition. But at nearly $16,000, the Honda Fit could be best thought of as "more car, more money" compared to the others on the list."
"The manual shift Mirage proved to be a lot of fun. Although it has only three cylinders producing 74 horsepower, the engine has just 1,973 pounds to move around meaning that acceleration onto the highway was more than adequate. The sound coming from the 1.2-liter three-banger engine does take some getting used to. It isn't exactly "loud" but it has more growl when accelerating from a dead stop than any other vehicle tested. But with an EPA rating of 37 mpg (6.36 L/100km) combined (34 mpg city, 42 mpg highway) means my daughter would be spending significantly less at the pump than she would have with some of the other small vehicles. The Mirage received good ratings in IIHS testing (except for the new small-overlap front crash test) and it has seven airbags. The Mirage offers a lot of value, including power windows, power mirrors, power door locks, and USB connectivity. It even has automatic climate control on the base model, a very luxurious feature on the second or third least-expensive vehicle in the market. The rear-seat knee and head room is a little tight for my 6'1" frame, but at 5'10", my daughter fit fine in the back seat even with the front seats all the way back. Rear cargo space is very limited, hardly surprising in a vehicle fully a foot shorter than the Honda Fit.

In the end, her decision came down to the Honda Fit versus the Mitsubishi Mirage and that all-important consideration of money."

The Honda Fit is undoubtedly the better vehicle to drive and haul and with Honda's reputation for reliability is a strong incentive to stick with a better known brand.
With the Mirage already much less expensive than the Fit, and coming with $1,000 factory cash incentive putting its final price about $4,000 lower than the Fit's the Mirage was chosen.

Great real life story, although I would have chosen the Honda Fit. Even at $4000 extra it's got more power, a larger boot, the "magic seat", a higher resale value and is consistently rated the best sub-compact by most automotive journalists. Oh and by the way at 6'3" tall I am very comfortable either sitting in the front seat or the back seat of the Fit, can't say the same for the Mirage. These are my reasons why the Honda Fit is still the best value for the money in the sub-compact class.
Then again it's all relative like I always say, for her the Mirage fits her size fine and she saved $4000 smackers, well done.

2014 J.D. POWER US Vehicle Dependability Rankings

The 2014 J.D. Power vehicle dependability study examines problems experienced during the past 12 months by original owners of 2011 model-year vehicles.
"The 2014 Vehicle Dependability Study is based on responses from more than 41,000 original owners of 2011 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership. The study was fielded between October and December 2013."
Overall dependability is determined by the number of problems experienced per 100 vehicles. (a lower score reflecting higher quality, less issues)
A little disturbing is that there was a 6 percent increase in problems from the 2013 J.D. Power dependability study based on the 2010 model year vehicles. This is the first time since the 1998 study (based on 1995 model year) that the average number of problems has increased (quality decreased).

In Summary:
Highest to Lowest Ranks:
https://pictures.dealer.com/j/jdpower/1301/12c2f593e902b8db6cf63cb81ccf78b2x.jpg
Lexus at the top is of no surprise, but Mini a the bottom of all vehicle manufacturers is. What is BMW doing wrong with the Mini brand quality?
As well within the next three years J.D. Power dependability study should see a big drop in all GM brands quality rating (based on surge in 2013-2014 model year recalls by GM). Therefore the 2016 and 2017 J.D. Power dependability study should find most GM brands at the bottom of the group.

Love this quick chart, these are the best three brand and models choices in every vehicle category.

2015 FORD Mustang (with engine information now avaialble)

So it's finally confirmed on both the Ford.ca and Ford.com web-sites. There will be three engine choices for the North American markets, a four, six and eight cylinder.http://media.caranddriver.com/images/13q4/545640/2015-ford-mustang-gt-photo-565296-s-520x318.jpg
First the 2.3L Turbocharged four (EcoBoost engine) is direct injected and uses a twin-scroll turbocharger and air-to-air inter-cooler to produce at least 305 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque.

The 3.7-liter V-6 is expected to produce 300 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque, if these numbers remain it will be a drop of 5 hp and 10 lb-ft of torque from the previous year.

The big boy, the 5.0 liter V8 is expected to make at least 420 horsepower and 396 lb-ft of torque.

Ford is declining to give exact numbers for any of the three engines, they may surprise the market by  announcing larger engine power numbers before the car goes on sale.
All three engines can be mated to either a six-speed Getrag manual transmission or a six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters.

Top 10 Bestt Hatchbacks -- UK review

EVO magazine from the UK has compiled a fairly lengthy and detailed top ten best hatchbacks article.
Please note that some of these cars are only available in certain markets with the engine specified in the article. As well even though these cars may be WORLD cars they are offered in various markets with different engines, due primarily to gasoline octane levels available in those markets. (ex. highest octane in North America is 94, where in Europe highest is 99+)

1) VW Golf R mk7
VW Golf R mk7 review, price and specs
What they say ... "The new VW Golf GTI is good – one of the best ever, in fact. So you wonder just how much better the 297bhp, 4WD Golf R can be. The answer is quite a lot. Not as an all-round car – the GTI already has that nailed – but it’s on another level in terms of acceleration, corner speed, stability and, crucially, excitement. In many respects it’s reminiscent of old Impreza STIs and Mitsubishi Evos. You throw it at corners, cambers and crests just to try and challenge it because it can soak up so much punishment. What’s just as impressive is how it remains true to the GTI’s time-honoured credo, possessing decent ride quality, great refinement and comfort levels, and true family car practicality. A flagship Golf to get really excited about, the new R offers immense pace and a truly engaging driving experience in a compromise-free package with class and quality aplenty"

2) Renaultsport Megane 265 (RS)
Renault Megane Red Bull RB8 Racing
What they say ... "Combining a coupe side profile with the genre’s most focused chassis (as well as a properly punchy 261bhp 2-litre turbo engine), the Megane makes a case for being a true all-rounder if you can tolerate a firm ride. Experience its mechanical limited-slip differential in action and we’d wager your £27,000 won’t go anywhere else."
Full EVO review and video on the Renault Megane RS, link: http://www.evo.co.uk/carreviews/evocarreviews/280699/renault_megane_265_cup_review.html

3) Ford Fiesta ST
Ford Fiesta ST red
What they say ... "This is just how a junior hot hatch should be, we said in our five-way hot hatch group test. The Fiesta ST mixes a punchy 179bhp 1.6-litre turbo engine with a properly chuckable front-drive chassis that also manages to serve up plenty of grip and precision. And with a £16,995 price tag, it’s also nearly £2000 cheaper than its key rivals.
Even better news is the supremely good value Mountune upgrade; an extra £599 buys you an extra 33bhp, enough to transform a great car into one of the best affordable performance cars of all time."
Full EVO review on the Ford Fiesta ST, link: http://www.evo.co.uk/carreviews/evocarreviews/288643/ford_fiesta_st_review_price_and_specs.html

4) Mini John Cooper Works GP

Mini John Cooper Works GP review: Best of 2013
What they say ... "The mk2 Mini GP is hyped-up, aggressive and quite a lot to hang on to on Britain’s bumpy roads, but its uncompromising style of performance is the very core of its appeal. It’s an extreme hot hatch reminiscent of one of the class’s all-time greats, the Renaultsport Megane R26.R.
It only has two seats, while at £28,790 it costs nearly as much as the 100bhp-healthier BMW M135i. Yet the Mini GP also boasts rarity – just 200 made it to the UK – and a 150mph top speed. And at its best the GP is about the most exciting front-drive car you can imagine. ‘Angry and urgent like a wasp in a tin,’ Richard Meaden said"

Full EVO review and video on the Mini John Cooper Works GP, link: http://www.evo.co.uk/carreviews/evocarreviews/288166/mini_john_cooper_works_gp_review_best_of_2013.html

5) BMW M135i
BMW M135i black five-door drift
What they say ..."If you’re looking for the most sophisticated, best-quality hatch then the BMW wins hands down, we said when the M135i and Megane 265 clashed earlier in 2013. The Renault edged it for thrills, but there’s no denying the Beemer is a more luxurious item. Its engine has two more cylinders for a start, its 316bhp 3-litre straight-six turbo serving up the best noise and some of the most potent pace in the class. It drives the rear wheels, too, offering a finer balance than its more traditional, front-drive rivals. It’s a class act, whether you stick with a six-speed manual or choose the slick eight-speed automatic. And priced from a smidge over £30,000, it’s something of a bargain too."
Full EVO review on the BMW M135i, link: http://www.evo.co.uk/carreviews/evocarreviews/285697/bmw_m135i_review_price_and_specs.html

6) Suzuki Swift Sport

Suzuki Swift Sport five door
What they say ... "Our favourite of the sub-150bhp, mini hot hatch pack, the Suzuki Swift Sport manages to be a heap more fun than its 134bhp peak and modest £13,749 price tag might suggest.
Its 1.6-litre engine has no turbo attached to it and loves to be revved, while the sharp steering and slick six-speed manual gearbox are both a joy to use. The Swift also boasts an uncanny amount of ride comfort."

Full EVO review on the Suzuki Swift Sport, link: http://www.evo.co.uk/carreviews/evocarreviews/274408/suzuki_swift_sport_review_price_and_specs.html

7) Ford Focus ST

2012 Ford Focus ST 5-dr
What they say ... "Ford doesn’t make a hardcore Focus RS at the moment, but the 247bhp, 154mph ST puts in a good appearance in its absence. It entered the market aiming for the Golf GTI’s all-rounder honours, and in our twin-test against the (now superseded) mk6 GTI last summer, it stole them. Ford has successfully trodden a very fine line with the Focus ST – dynamic enough to be genuinely interesting and sensible enough to justify itself as everyday transport. And like the Fiesta, it comprehensively outdoes its rivals on price, starting at £21,995."
Full EVO review and video on the Ford Focus ST, link: http://www.evo.co.uk/carreviews/evocarreviews/284302/ford_focus_st_review_price_and_specs.html

8) Peugeot 208 GTI

Peugeot 208 GTI review
What they say ... "Its 1.6-litre turbo engine produces 197bhp and 203lb ft, enough for a 6.8sec 0-62 time and a 143mph top speed. And unlike the Renault, it comes with a six-speed manual gearbox, rather than a paddle-shift box. It’s also arguably the prettiest car in its class. It’s great to have a Peugeot we can champion again."
Full EVO review on the Ford Focus ST, link: http://www.evo.co.uk/carreviews/evocarreviews/288817/peugeot_208_gti_review_price_and_specs.html

9) SEAT Leon Cupra 280
SEAT Leon Cupra 280
What they say ... "For starters it has the same engine that sits in the nose of the Golf R, albeit detuned to 276bhp in order to leave some headroom for the rumoured Cupra R and channelled through the front wheels only. Three-stage dampers (controlled by the fiddly infotainment system, like in the Golf R) give you a choice of stiffness, while a Haldex limited-slip differential called VAQ can put 100 per cent of the turbocharged in-line four’s torque to one wheel if you lean on it hard enough. Fitted with an optional DSQ twin-clutch paddle-shift tranmssion, it completes 0-60 in just 5.7sec, making it the most accelerative SEAT ever. Priced from £26,940, it’s also around £3000 cheaper than a comparative Golf R and where it trumps the VW is with its trackday credentials: this is (as we write!) the fastest front-wheel-drive car to ever lap the Nurburgring’s fearsome Nordschleife, taking ten seconds off the record previously held by the Megane Cup with a 7:58.4 time. There are rumours the victorious car was missing a few items of standard equipment, but even so – this is a family car with a paddle-shift gearbox that is quicker than an Audi R8 V8 or E92 BMW M3 around the green hell."
Full EVO review on the Seat Leon Cupra 280, link: http://www.evo.co.uk/carreviews/evocarreviews/291766/seat_leon_cupra_280_review_price_and_specs.html

10) VW Golf GTI mk7
2013 VW Golf GTI mk7 red front
What they say ... "The all-new Volkswagen Golf GTI moves the game on considerably from its predecessor, mating the VW Group’s trick new MQB chassis architecture to a host of gadgets, including super-sharp new Progressive Steering. Balance, grip, poise, agility – it has it all. It might not be the most outright fun hot hatch, but it’s certainly one of the classiest and most polished. Its 2-litre turbo engine has 217bhp as standard, but an extra £980 buys the Performance Pack, which adds another 10bhp plus bigger brakes and a proper limited-slip diff."

2015 BMW X3 xDrive28d (d for diesel power)

This may be the only vehicle you will need for all four seasons of the year (especially winter). The 2015 BMW X3 xDrive28d, all-wheel drive, efficient diesel engine, good ground clearance and as with all diesel engines great towing capabilities.

Power comes from an all new 2.0 Liter inline 4-cylinder turbodiesel engine producing 181 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque, with 0-100km/h (60mph) acceleration in around 8 seconds. Transmission is an all new 8 speed automatic that helps save fuel, along with an ECO PRO mode.
2015 BMW X3 xDrive28d's traction and stability control systems work together with the xDrive system to prevent slipping while correcting the vehicles over-steer and under-steer, as with most SUVs hill descent control is also standard.
The 2015 BMW X3 xDrive28d has a 550 liter trunk that expands to 1,600 liters with the rear seats folded down.
How much will all these great features cost? Around $45,000 Canadian or $42,825 US depending on your residence.

2016 Chevrolet Cruze revealed (no camouflage)

We're still in 2014 but already the new 2016 Chevrolet Cruze has been revealed is being tested. The folks at Automobilemag.com somehow got their hands on these pictures.

http://image.automobilemag.com/f/69951475+w256+h171+q80+re0+cr1+ar0/2016-chevrolet-cruze-spied-front-three-quarters-05.jpg
2016 chevrolet cruze spied rear three quarters 02

I gotta tell you this new look for cars nowadays really doesn't do it for me. I call it "fish mouth look" best example is the new Ford Fusion and Fiesta and now the virus has infected the Cruze.

It's too early to know which engine GM will drop into the 2016 Cruze but since it is a "world car" like the Ford Focus there will be several engines which will be region dependent.
Automobilemag.com says:
"It's unclear what engines will power the next-generation 2016 Chevrolet Cruze. Given that the black car spied here sports a red "Turbo" badge, it's possible the compact sedan could simply use updated version of the current Cruze's turbocharged four-cylinder. Today's Chevrolet Cruze offers a 138-hp, 1.8-liter inline-four; a 138-hp, 1.4-liter turbo-four; and a 151-hp, 2.0-liter turbodiesel."

Nissan's new 1.5L three cylinder engine producing 400 hp

Yes, a 1.5 liter turbo engine weighing only 88 lbs (40 kg) that produces 400 hp, it's called the DIG-T R. So forget about electric motors that need to be recharged and hydrogen cells, the future may be this little bugger. It's only 20 inches (50 cm) tall and 8 inches (20 cm) wide.
 http://www.wired.com/images_blogs/autopia/2014/01/ZEOD_Engine_Large_06-1500.jpg
This little engine is being tested in a vehicle called the ZEOD RC which is short for Zero Emission On Demand Racing Car.
The ZEOD RC is Nissan's attempt towards reducing size while increasing efficiency in an effort to develop a more efficient gas-electric hybrid engine.
Nissan says that the main problem in developing the DIG-T R for the ZEOD RC was cutting down on friction, Nissan worked closely with Total to come up with better fuels and lubricants to take care of internal friction.
In June it will take part in the Le Mans 24 Hour, lessons learned from the ZEOD RC will be used in Nissan’s entry in the LM P1 class of the FIA World Endurance Championship in 2015.

The new engine powers the ZEOD RC

2015 Honda HR-V, the compact SUV

It's starting to feel a little crowded in the compact SUV field. Almost every car manufacturer is arriving in late 2014 with a 2015 "urban" crossover vehicle. As much as I believe that these compact SUVs will be huge hits in Canada, Europe and Asia they may be too small for US consumer preferences.

Low and behold the Honda offering ...........

2015 Honda HR-V

In Japan it is currently sold as the Honda Vezel and is powered by the same 1.5 Liter four cylinder engine that powers the Honda Fit / Jazz. There is also a 1.5 Liter hybrid engine incorporating a high output electric motor. Available trunk space is 453 Liters for the gas FWD version and 404 Liters for the hybrid FWD version.

There is no definite word on what will power the North American version of the 2015 Honda HR-V. It may be using the new 2015 Honda Fit's 1.5 Liter four cylinder engine that develops 130 hp (97 kW) and 114 lb-ft (154 Nm) of torque. Also rumored for the North American market is the 1.8L Civic engine and the CR-V's 2.4 Liter engine (2.4L engine I find highly unlikely). The HR-V will be equipped with the Honda exclusive "Magic Seat" which allows for multiple seating configurations, including folding the second row seats completely flat into the floor. Owners can actually lift the back seat bottom to "fit" (pun intended) a bike standing up. Measuring 4295mm the HR-V will be 235mm shorter than the CR-V model.
Prices should be starting somewhere at just under $24,000 US for the FWD model. Launch date is expected to be fall of 2014 and it will be built in the Celaya Mexico plant alongside the 2015 Honda Fit.

2015 Nissan Micra @ $9998 it's the lowest priced car in Canada

WOW a new car for under $10K, the 2015 Nissan Micra S starts at $9998 before taxes and destination charges. At that price you get the 5 speed manual transmission, 15" tires, a 1.6L DOHC engine producing 109 HP @ 6000 rpm, brakes (including ABS & EBD), traction control, complete surround set of airbags and AM/FM CD radio and four speakers.

Actually it's not that bad, just be prepared to sweat in the summer. A/C and cruise control are provided as a package on the Micra S if you choose to take the automatic transmission option for $13295.

I'm almost certain that the 2015 Micra base model will be a huge hit with restaurant (pizza) and other delivery companies.
I don't believe that the 2015 Nissan Micra will be as big of a hit with the public in the Canadian market as it is in European market. There are so many other more powerful and larger sub compacts available for a few thousand dollars more. For example the Nissan Versa sedan which is much larger than the Micra starts at only $11,898, and you get a decent trunk.
The other factor is that the driving distances here is Canada are much greater than that of most European countries.
Consumption figures are not out yet but they should be around 7.4L per 100km in the city and 5.4L on the highway.

All-Season Tire -- The Best Tire vs The Best Value Tire (mail in rebate time)

It's time once again, the changeover from those muddy, salty winter tires for their all-season counterparts. There are so many tire manufacturers and tire models of tires to choose from. So what is more important value for the money or performance and quality, let's analyze the competition.

Since the majority of sedans sold today are compact to mid-size I have chosen 195/65/15 as the base tire size. Prices for larger and smaller size tires should increase and decrease proportionally.

PMC Canada Top 10 rated: (Canadian Dollars taxes not included, mail in rebate in red)

Michelin Defender       (T speed rated)  (820 AB)  $131.79-$17.50=$114.29
Michelin Primacy MXV4               (H)  (620 AA)  $135.32-$17.50=$117.82
Bridgestone Turanza Serenity Plus  (H)  (600 AA)  $129.44-$17.50=$111.94
Michelin Pilot Exalto A/S               (H)  (400 AA)  $107.94-$17.50=$90.44
Bfgoodrich Advantage T/A            (H)  (560 AA)  $121.19-$12.50=$108.69
General Altimax HP                       (H)  (440 AA)  $103.61-$8.75=$94.86
Goodyear Assurance TrpleTredAS(H)  (740 AB)  $145.02-$15.00=$130.02
Yokohama Avid Touring S              (S)  (620 AB) $103.98-$12.50=$91.48
Pirelli P4 Four-Season                   (T)  (760 AB) $105.04-$10.00=$95.04
Some tires offer H or T rated versions, one version has not been posted.
Bargain value tire rated just at 10th spot:
Kumho Solus KR21                      (T)  (680 AB) $85.68-$8.00=$77.68

The Kumho KR21 seems like such a bargain at $77.68 per tire, yes it may not be the best handling or most durable but the value for the money is incredible. The Michelin Pilot Exalto A/S will probably be the "drivers" best choice in tire at $90.44, even though the durability falls a little short. The best well rounded tire will be the Pirelli P4 at $95.04 blends the best of all the categories with long life treadwear. (also available in H speed rating)
Which tire is best for you is your choice, just remember that most cars that are fitted with this size tire are NOT sports cars. Therefore no matter how good the tire is these vehicles are generally victims of their own chassis and suspension limitations.

* Speed ratings in the first bracket next to tire are: S up to 180km/h (112mph), T up to 190km/h (118mph) and H up to 210 km/h (130mph)
Second brackets will contain durability, traction/handling and heat resistance of the tire. The higher the number the longer the tire will last, as an example a tire with 820 rating will last twice as long as a 400 rated tire. The higher the first letter (AA and A being best) the better the traction and handling. The higher the second letter (AA and A being best) the higher the speed that tire can handle (temperature basis).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now in the US prices are often 20 to 40% cheaper than in Canada. Blame the weak dollar, a smaller population, whatever the manufacturers want you to believe are the reasons. Maybe since Canada is more north there is more hot air they are trying to sell us Canadians.

Here are the prices from TireRack.com: (All prices in US dollars taxes not included)

Michelin Defender       (T speed rated)  (820 AB)  $107.00
Michelin Primacy MXV4               (H)  (620 AA)  $119.00
Bridgestone Turanza Serenity Plus  (H)  (600 AA)  $88.00-$17.50=$70.50
Michelin Pilot Exalto A/S               (H)  (400 AA)   N/A
Bfgoodrich Advantage T/A            (H)  (560 AA)  $75.00
General Altimax HP                       (H)  (440 AA)  $59.00
Goodyear Assurance TrpleTredAS(H)  (740 AB)  $99.00
Yokohama Avid Touring S              (S)  (620 AB)  $71.00
Pirelli P4 Four-Season                   (T)  (760 AB)  $85.00
Kumho Solus KR21                      (T)  (680 AB)  $63.00
Rebates are available for Bridgestone Turanza Serenity Plus ($17.50 each). Rebates do play a big role in tire decisions.

Speed rating information provided from tire rack.com web-site:
In 1997, the UTQG Traction Grades were revised to provide a new category of AA for the highest performing tires in addition to the earlier A, B and C grades. Previously the A grade had been the highest available and was awarded to tires that offered wet coefficients of traction above 0.47 g on asphalt and 0.35 g on concrete. Today the grades and their traction coefficients are as follows:
Traction
Grades
Asphalt
g-Force
Concrete
g-Force
AAAbove 0.540.41
AAbove 0.470.35
BAbove 0.380.26
CLess Than 0.380.26
Temperature (Resistance) Grades
The UTQG Temperature Grade indicates the extent to which heat is generated/ or dissipated by a tire. If the tire is unable to dissipate the heat effectively or if the tire is unable to resist the destructive effects of heat buildup, its ability to run at high speeds is reduced. The grade is established by measuring a loaded tire's ability to operate at high speeds without failure by running an inflated test tire against a large diameter high-speed laboratory test wheel.
Temperature
Grades
Speeds
in mph
AOver 115
BBetween 100 to 115
CBetween 85 to 100
Treadwear Grades
UTQG Treadwear Grades are based on actual road use in which the test tire is run in a vehicle convoy along with standardized Course Monitoring Tires. The vehicle repeatedly runs a prescribed 400-mile test loop in West Texas for a total of 7,200 miles. The vehicle can have its alignment set, air pressure checked and tires rotated every 800 miles. The test tire's and the Monitoring Tire's wear are measured during and at the conclusion of the test. The tire manufacturers then assign a Treadwear Grade based on the observed wear rates. The Course Monitoring Tire is assigned a grade and the test tire receives a grade indicating its relative treadwear. A grade of 100 would indicate that the tire tread would last as long as the test tire, 200 would indicate the tread would last twice as long, 300 would indicate three times as long, etc.
The problem with UTQG Treadwear Grades is that they are open to some interpretation on the part of the tire manufacturer because they are assigned after the tire has only experienced a little treadwear as it runs the 7,200 miles. This means that the tire manufacturers need to extrapolate their raw wear data when they are assigning Treadwear Grades, and that their grades can to some extent reflect how conservative or optimistic their marketing department is. Typically, comparing the Treadwear Grades of tire lines within a single brand is somewhat helpful, while attempting to compare the grades between different brands is not as helpful.

Pimped up FORD Transit with 640hp -- silly but worth a smile

Back in the 1990's TWR refitted a Ford Transit van with a Jaguar XJ220 twin turbo 3.0 L V6 engine, originally it produced 540 hp. For some time thereafter this Ford van was a parts truck for the Benetton F1 racing team. The original engine on the Jaguar XJ220 produced a 0-60 mph (98 km/h) time of 3.6 seconds, of course the Transit van due to it's weight would not match that time.

More recently Don Law Racing acquired the van and began restoring and improving it, the van currently produces 640 hp with a top speed of 170 mph (273 km/h)

For the full article follow the link to Road&Track.com: http://www.roadandtrack.com/car-videos/ford-transit-that-helped-build-xj220

2015 Hyundai Sonata

The South Korean manufacturers are often overlooked when it comes to mid sized sedans, but Hyundai and it's sister company KIA do a pretty good job at it.
The new 2015 Hyundai Sonata will be challenging the new Accord and Camry head on. The difference between them is the value you get for the money, let me explain.
Nice standard features include Advanced Smart Cruise Control, Blind Spot Detection, Lane Departure Warning System, hands free Smart Trunk, driver knee airbag, modern LED lighting, emergency stop signal, electronic parking brake and heated rear seats.
Most if not all of these features are often extras or not available in their Japanese competition, if you want to call them that because all of these cars built for the North American market are built in the US (including the Sonata). Which is pretty funny because the American manufacturers are starting to build some of their vehicles in Mexico, South Korea and believe it or not Italy.
Now back to the 2015 Sonata, looks pretty nice probably not as sporty looking as it's sister car the Kia Optima.

2015-Hyundai-Sonata-blue.jpg

2015-Hyundai-Sonata-cabin.jpg

2015-Hyundai-Sonata-silver.jpg
The Sonata has grown nearly 1.4 inches in length and is almost 1.2 inches in width and the cabin has become more spacious and luxurious than it's predecessor.
"To help improve ride and handling performance, significant changes were made to the front and rear suspension resulting in enhanced responsiveness, handling and stability. In addition, steering feel has been further enhanced with the development of the Motor Driven Power Steering (MDPS) resulting in a larger data processing unit, increased logic control cycle and motor control speed and greater steering column rigidity."
Three engines are available for the 2015 Hyundai Sonata in the Korean market, a 2.0-liter CVVL (166 hp, 148 lb-ft of torque), 2.4-liter GDi (198 hp, 184 lb-ft of torque) and a 2.0-liter LPi (149 hp, 143 lb-ft of torque), mated to a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic transmission.
Here in North America the base engine will probably be the 2.4-liter GDi (198 hp, 184 lb-ft of torque) with an optional engine in the 2.0T (274 hp, 269 lb-ft of torque).

2015 AUDI TT (what a ride)

The 2015 AUDI TT, the interior, -- das ist uber cool -- hope my German is OK.

2015 Audi TT

This is so cool, the GPS in the best possible location, right in front of you, next to your speed and RPM display. It's actually a virtual display, a 12.3 inch hexagonal display providing 1440 x 540 pixel resolution via two Nvidia processors. The TT will also sport two 64 GB SD card slots and an 11 GB hard drive.

That's not all, the exterior gets even better. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so here it is.

2015 Audi TT

The 2015 TT uses an aluminum shell with hot stamped high-strength steel forming floors. Length of the TT comes in at 2,505 mm, this is the shortest version of the MQB platform but is still 37 mm longer than the previous model. New version has shaved of 50 kg from it's weight while at the same time making it's structure 23 percent stiffer.
Mechanically North American models will be offered with the 2.0L TFSI engine producing 230 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque. The TT-s model cars will produce 310 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque producing a 0–100 km/h time of 4.7 seconds.
Possibly we may get a six-speed manual gearbox in the North American market but we will probably be restricted to a version of the Quattro all-wheel-drive system mated to a six-speed Stronic automatic transmission.
Other world markets (such as Europe) may receive a diesel engine, possibly in a front wheel drive configuration as well.

The beautifully thought out interior has 15 driver assist systems including adaptive cruise control, lane assist, park assist, night vision and head-up display.

2015 Audi TT

There’s no word yet on pricing. Full article and pictures found on autos.ca web-site, follow link: http://www.autos.ca/audi/preview-2015-audi-tt/
